Sports Talk: Jr. high boys’ baseball

As summer is slowly but surely approaching, we are all getting excited, especially some of our student-athletes who play baseball. I interviewed 8th graders Max Belis, Zach Gonzalez, Tanner Swogger and Matthew Berkowitz to get an insight into what baseball means to them, how they could get better and how super excited they are to begin their season.

Max Belis

Q.) Why did you start playing baseball?

A.) Because I would always go outside with my pap, and I loved throwing and hitting baseballs.

Q.) Who’s your favorite baseball player?

A.) Mike Trout.

Q.) Are you excited for this season?

A.)Yes, because I haven’t played in a while.

Q.) What position do you play or which position do you want to play?

A.) Shortstop.

Zach Gonzalez

Q.) Who introduced you to baseball?

A.) My dad.

Q.) What is your least favorite position?

A.) Catcher.

Q.) What baseball player do you look up to?

A.) Javier Baez.

Q.) Do you think you’ll do better this year as compared to last?

A.) Yeah, I think so.

Tanner Swogger

Q.) How long have you been playing baseball?

A.) Eight years.

Q.) What six traits make up a good team?

A.) Hard working, skilled, determined, funny, social, and having knowledge of the game.

Q.) What are some things you can work on this season?

A.) Catching and throwing.

Q.) On a scale from 1-10, how difficult is baseball?

A.) It’s a five.

Matthew Berkowitz

Q.) What would you say to kids who are new to baseball?

A.) Stick to it, and don’t let the failures get to you.

Q.) What’s your strongest position?

A.) Pitcher.

Q.) What’s your weakest position?

A.) First base.

Q.) On a scale from 1-10, how do you think this year’s season will go and why?

A.) I’d say a 10. I have highs expectations, and we’re looking strong.

If you’ve never played baseball before, think about giving it a try! What’s the worst that could happen? As long as you practice and help your team as much as you can, that’s the only thing that matters.

As for these junior high boys, they definitely have high hopes for their upcoming season. Hopefully they will have an undefeated one. Good luck!
