BA snatches a win on opening day
March 29, 2021
The Blue Devil baseball team got their season started off on Saturday afternoon at West Branch. This was the first time BA has taken the field since 2019.
There is always a little bit of nerves on opening day, but the Blue Devils didn’t seem to let that affect them.
BA started the game hot with 5 hits in the first inning, which gave them an early lead that they never gave up. Bellwood won in a close contest 6-5.
Junior Jack Luensmann started on the mound for BA and only surrendered one run in two innings pitched.
Bellwood built a four-run lead going into the fifth, but West Branch was able to get some baserunners and score a pair of runs. Senior Arik Shildt got BA out of a jam in the fifth, getting a strikeout with bases loaded. Shildt then went on to close the game out for the Blue Devils pitching 2.1 innings.
The Warriors didn’t go away without a fight as they made things interesting in the bottom of the 7th. The leadoff batter smacked a triple and eventually scored bringing the game to within one run. With two outs and runners on second and third, Shildt was able to force a groundout to end the game.
This was a great start to the season for the Blue Devils. They finished the game with 11 hits and clutched up in the field when they needed to.
Bellwood will now travel to Saint Joseph’s to take on the Wolfpack on Monday night. Good luck to the baseball team.
