On Monday, freshman Blake Pennington placed first in her category at the Speech League competition at Bishop Carroll High School.
Blake was categorized in Oratorical Declamation, where the orator learns a speech written by another person and delivers it.
The speech that Blake delivered was ” Make Your Bed,” which was first spoken by Admiral William. H. McRaven during the commencement address to graduates of the University of Texas at Austin on May 17, 2014.
“Blake has great potential and will continue to do well because she is an extremely hard worker and highly motivated to succeed,” said Speech Advisor Mrs. Carol Bartlett.
Blake said she was very happy with her speech and thought all of the other competitors did amazing as well.
“I definitely had it more memorized than last meet and was less nervous, but there’s always still room for improvement!” Pennington said.
She feels as if speech is an extra benefit because public speaking is something you can use later in life.
“I think that speech team is a very fun extra activity,” she said.
Other members of the speech team include:
Eric Johnson
Julie Kraft
Noah Gulvas
Cameron Nelson
Alia Bennett
Chloe Stoltzfus
Ava Conway
Lily McNelis
The next meet will be Districts, held on February 16 at Richland High School.
