On March 14, America celebrates National Potato chip Day, the country’s number one selling snack food.
Where did potato chips come from, you may wonder. On August 24, 1853, an unhappy restaurant customer kept sending his potatoes back to the kitchen, he was complaining how they were to thick and soggy. Chef George Crum then then decided to slice the potatoes as thin as possible also frying them to a crisp. To the chefs surprise, the customer loved them.
Now, Americas consume roughly 1.85 million pounds of chips annually, or around 6.6 pounds per person.
The brand Lay’s is the leading potato chip brand in the United States with about 4.13 Billion U.S dollars worth of sales in 2023. Ruffles was in 2nd with 1.8 Billion U.S dollars in sales.
One thing that has helped to maintain the popularity of potato chips is the food’s versatility. In Lay’s alone there’s over 200 different flavors of chips. Barbecue may be the most popular flavor of chip, but there are also flavors like cheddar, sour cream and onion, and salt and vinegar. There are also more exotic flavors like dill pickle and jalapeno.
There are also many textures involved with chips. Some like a traditional cut while others prefer ruffled chips. Kettle cooked chips are often folded and extra crunchy. Pringles gives chip lovers a consistent texture and crunch every time, and they’re served out of a can.
As everyone in Central Pennsylvania knows, Middlesworth chips have a smooth, almost creamy consistency, that melts in your mouth. Most Central Pennsylvanians agree Middlesworth may be the top brand in America.
With so many varieties and flavors to choose from, how can you not recognize the holiday with a tall bag of potato chips.
