On Thursday, Mr. Batemans industrial arts class delivered a beautiful countertop made out of wood to the media center.
The table top was coated with a polyurethane finish to resist heat and other dangerous hazards. The finish allows the countertop to be continuously used throughout the school year for years to come.
“This is a very beneficial thing to have in the media center, and I’m very happy with how it turned out,” said Mrs. Solomon, who is in charge of the media center and runs the cafe.
The countertop gives Mrs. Solomon more storage for her to prepare meals and beverages and store items behind the cafe counter. Students using the cafe can buy any number of snacks and beverages ranging from coffee to donuts to chips and soda. However, the growing variety of items on the menu make easy storage difficult in the confined space of the cafe.
“It was a conjoined project, as the students had to meet a lot of expectations to keep the place safe,” Mrs. Solomon said.
Mr. Bateman credited juniors Brady Brown and Dakota Corle for coming up with the design for the countertop. Seniors Kayden Reed and Damien Lovell did much of the work on it.
The students who worked on the project developed a detailed sketch of the countertop based on the expectations and needs of Mrs. Solomon before beginning the physical labor of the project.
