Today, April 1 is everyone’s favorite day, the day you can make jokes, and tricks toward the people you know. It’s no other than April Fools Day
The history of April Fools goes back to the 1580’s when France switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. Pope Gregory XIII ordered the new year to begin on January 1, not April 1 as it used to be. Despite this change, people would celebrate New Year’s in April still, which people would call them “fools”
In the 1800’s, Britian would celebrate each year, playing pranks, tricks, and something called “hunting the gowk” which is a Scottish prank. Gowk is Scottish for cuckoo bird, which makes the phase “hunting for a cuckoo” or “chasing the fool”
Not only does April Fools means just pranking other people. BBC did a story in 1957 regarding a family harvesting spaghetti from trees. The report, talked about the “elimination of the spaghetti weevil.” Hundreds of viewers called BBC asking how to grow their own spaghetti trees, to which BBC responded with ” Place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best.”
Stay aware today, as people could lay “stuck money” on the ground, or one of your family members might flip everything in your house upside down.
And that’s the real truth about April Fools and its history… or is it?
