This past Friday, the Bellwood-Antis girls’ basketball took on the Lady Hornets of Juniata Valley. Predicted to be a tight ball game, it proved to be so. Bellwood-Antis fell 60-57 to start off conference play.

Bellwood had trouble containing Sydney Reed in the first half, allowing her to score 21 in the half and 26 overall.

Down by 7 at the half, with the score being 33-26, Bellwood made some halftime adjustments and came out of the locker room playing inspired defense. However, Juniata Valley stepped up its’ defensive pressure as well.

Sierra Stevens and other B-A defenders had their hands full with Sydney Reed.

Even though Bellwood outscored Juniata Valley by 5 in the 4th quarter, it was not enough.  The back and forth contest came down to Juniata Valley making their free throws and Bellwood missing opportunities to tie it up, including a 3-pointer and a half-court shot as time expired.

It didn’t help that Bellwood star Karson Swogger fouled out in the final minutes of the game.

It was a hard-fought battle and a devastating loss. We need to come out with intensity this next game.

Swogger led the Lady Blue Devils with 16 points and 5 assists.

Caroline Showalter followed Karson with a double-double, 11 points and 15 rebounds. “It was a hard-fought battle and a devastating loss. We need to come out with intensity this next game,” said Caroline regarding the loss.

Riley D’Angelo poured in 10 points and Sophie Damiano added 7 points and 9 rebounds.

The loss dropped the girls’ record to 1-2 and put them behind in the quest for another ICC title.
