Tune Talk: Marina and the Diamonds
April 11, 2017
Marina Lambrini Diamandis is a Welsh singer- songwriter. In 2005, she created the stage name “Marina and the Diamonds.” “The Diamonds” were referred to her fans.
Marina was born in Brynmawr, but was raised in nearby Pandy. Her parents divorced when she was a small child. After the divorce, Diamandis lived with her mother in a bungalow, ahraing a bedroom with her sister.
During her childhood, Diamandis attended Haberdashers Monmouth School for Girls, where she sort of found her talent in singing. She moved to London as a young teenager to become a professional singer. Diamandis first began writing songs when she was 18. She studied music at the University of East London and transferred to a classic composition course in Middlesex University the following year, but after 2 months she dropped out.
In 2009, Diamandis placed second in the BBC’s Sound of 2010 with her first debut album The Family Jewels. The albums second song Hollywood reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart. “I Am Not a Robot” was serviced as the third single from the album on April 26th, and peaked at number 26 on the UK Singles Chart.
Through the years of 2011-2013, the most popular album was Electra Heart. Diamandis invented the fictional character “Electra Heart” who in the album goes through a breakup, and learns to find herself. She portrays the personas “Teen Idol,” “Primadonna,” “Homewrecker,” and “Housewife,” which represent several female archetypes of the stereotypical American culture. The style of the album is very vintage, and girly-girl. Diamandis dresses as “70’s and surreal” for this album. The most popular single on the album is “Primadonna,” where it reached number 11 on the UK Singles Charts.
The last album that Diamandis has made is the album Froot. The album was released on April 3rd,2015, but due to the internet leak, the album was brought forward. In the album, Diamandis finally finds herself, and wanted to change to live a happy life. The album centered around entirely different things; half of the album is about a relationship that Diamandis had to end. The songs were recorded with a live band, and appear as quirky and had a collage of 70’s and 80’s. Diamandis had confirmed that six songs will be released before the album’s release, one each month up until April 6, 2015. Diamandis called it Froot of the Month. The most popular song on the album is actually the single Froot.
Diamandis has a style that changes through each album she writes. Her style for The Family Jewels was very pop and teenage-ish. There were very bright colors and lots of patent leather. Through the Electra Heart phase, it was very vintage and girly-girl. Lots of dresses, skirts, and lace. Everything was pastel and lots of pearls and diamonds. Marina is most recognized for this look. For the album Froot, it was very 70’s and silk. Diamandis seemed very mature in this era, and wanted to be older.
I absolutely adore Marina in every possible way. She really is my teen idol. Marina had a big influence on my outlook on life, fashion, and love. I suggest that you listen to “Shampain,’ “Valley of the Dolls,” “Lonely Hearts Club,” and “Hollywood.”
