Feature Teacher: Mrs. Nycum

Mrs. Nysum has been teaching at B-A for 30 years.

English and Reading teacher Mrs. Nycum has been teaching for 30 years, and in that time she has seen education change.

When Mrs. Nycum began teaching, the Pennsylvania Department of Education didn’t have PSSA testing, but that didn’t stop students from putting forth more effort with there work. On top of that, students were more respectful then, she said.

Mrs. Nycum said chose to teach at Bellwood when she was working on her masters degree and a job opened up around Christmas time. She’s been at B-A’s middle school ever since, long enough to see her two children, junior Andrew and sophomore Allison, through the hallways.

In Mrs. Nycum’s free time she like to spend time with family, walk and bake. She says if she could have any other job she would like to own a bake shop.

At school, Mrs. Nycum is a driving force behind the annual Blue Angels drive to provide Christmas gifts to families in need.

To Mrs. Nycum, the pros of teaching are “working with great kids and staff,” while the cons are are when “getting frustrated when I want the kids to succeed more than they want to, and when I know the student has the ability but choses not to use it.”
