Girl’s basketball comes up short in ICC championship

The Bellwood-Antis girls basketball team earned a spot in the ICC championship game at Claysburg-Kimmel High School on Saturday, but a slow start against eventual champion Williamsburg in the finals spelled doom for the Lady Devils.
Bellwood could get nothing going in the first quarter against the Lady Pirates, and fell to an almost insurmountable deficit, trailing 21-1 after the first quarter. They went on to lose 46-39..
Facing adversity, Bellwood was able to roar back and pulled the game within 4 at halftime, outscoring Williamsburg 20-4 in the second quarter. This put the game at 25-23
Williamsburg extended its lead to 8 at the end of the third quarter before the Lady Devils got the lead down to 4 once more to start the final period.
With the loss in the rear view mirror, the girls basketball team’s focus has now shifts to the playoffs. The No. 4 seeded Lady Devils will host the 5th seeded United Lions on Thursday in the first round of the District 6 2A playoffs. Bellwood was able to take care of business against United in the regular season with a 67-62 win.
In the first round of the ICC tournament, the Lady Devils took on the Southern Huntington Rockets. Bellwood was able to get off to a hot start scoring 26 points in the first quarter, giving them a 16 point advantage. Bellwood was able to hold on to their lead coasting to a 68-51 lead.
The junior duo of Chelsea McCaulsky and Lydia Worthing both scored a game high 15 points. Chelsea also facilitated for the offense dishing out 9 assists, coming up one shy of a double double. Lydia Worthing dominated in the paint for the Blue Devils also grabbing 15 rebounds to go along with her 15 points.
The semifinal victory pitted them in the rematch against Williamsburg. It was a highly anticipated championship game, with the teams splitting the regular season matchup, and the last game being a one point loss for the Blue Devils.
