Bellwood falls to Tyrone in the Backyard Brawl
September 1, 2022
A traditional start to the football season had unfamiliar results for the Blue Devils last Friday. For the past three years Bellwood-Antis has won the Backyard Brawl, but this year they came up short with a 27-12 loss in Tyrone.
The Blue Devils dug themselves in a hole after starting out the game down 21-0. With some changes in the defense they were able to hold Tyrone to only one more touchdown in the game.
Senior Gaven Ridgway was able to find senior Dylan Andrews down field to put the Blue Devils on the board with a 20-yard touchdown pass just before the end of the first half. Ridgway also scored on a 31-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Tyrone had 15 penalties for 100 yards, but the Blue Devils could not capitalize on their mistakes. Bellwood-Antis was able to run the ball for 100 rushing yards and had 94 passing yards as well.
Head Coach Nick Lovrich said the team played hard and that there were lots of positives to take away from the game as they prepare for Glendale.
“We just had to find ourselves,” he said. “We needed to find out what worked and what didn’t work.”
Senior Dylan Andrews said he has been thinking about this game since he was a little kid and that it it felt surreal to play in his final Backyard Brawl. Dylan said that he and his teammates will use this loss to motivate themselves and will work harder to prepare for the rest of the season.
The team this year has lost a lot of talent with, 14 seniors leading the team. With that, they also have a new leader at quarterback.
This senior class is ready for the challenges of the season. Although they came up short Friday night they are ready for their first home game Friday against Glendale.
The BluePrint will have a full picture slide show from the game uploaded later this week.
