Kiwanis president Fred Miller, right, dropped by Bellwood-Antis earlier this month to present a check to Superintendent Edward DiSabato targeted at reading initiatives at Myers Elementary.

Before the holiday, the Northern Blair County Kiwanis Club donated a check to the elementary reading program at Myers Elementary.

The check totaled $750 and is set to be used for reading initiatives in the school. Kiwanis president Fred Miller made the donation just before Thanksgiving break.

“The Northern Blair County Kiwanis Club has always worked to help serve the youth of our community,” Miller said.

The proceeds were raised from the annual Reliance Holiday basketball tournament, which takes place every year at Tyrone Area High School during Christmas break. Both Bellwood-Antis’ girls and boys teams are frequent participants in the tournament, with the Lady Devils last winning a championship in 2019.

“When we first met with Reliance Bank, everyone agreed this was a great opportunity for our basketball teams and a way to support elementary reading programs at both school districts  (Tyrone and Bellwood-Antis),” said Miller. “We are thankful to all of our sponsors and community members who have supported the tournament, which is now in its eleventh year.”

This year’s tournament will take place on December 27-29.

Proceeds from the tournament support the elementary reading programs at both Bellwood and Tyrone as well as the yearly Kiwanis scholarships at both school districts
