Straws are important. Some water bottles or cups need to have straws to be able to drink out of the bottle. Some people think straws are unimportant. They’re right in some ways, but they don’t think about stuff like water bottles.
National drinking straw day is January 3rd, and people think it’s a silly day. I think it’s a silly day too!
A lot of people want to ban drinking straws because they are bad for the environment. They’re polluting the oceans and an endangerment for the wildlife. They also litter our streets and roads, while they also can clog our gutters, rivers, lakes and streams. 15 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year. By 2025, experts predict there will be a pound of plastic in the ocean for every three pounds of fish.
They are also bad for the human health. They contain polypropylene and BPA which is also known as Bisphenol A which can contaminate your drink. Which is bad because Americans use millions of plastic straws each day.
When straws are exposed to sunlight, waves, wind, and hot temperature, they will break into smaller pieces, making microplastics which can ruin the body of all living things.
Plastic straws are bad for the environment, but they are also very useful for different drinks and bottles.
Should students be allowed to use plastic straws in school? Or should we switch to paper straws?
