Don’t ban dodgeball
March 10, 2016
For years, the old playground game of dodge ball has been taking a hit. Some say it is too violent, but others say it teaches kids important skills, such as teamwork. A student or child who is hit by a ball in the first few seconds spends the remainder of the game sitting out of the game, watching their other teammates. Those who do remain in the game, according to parents, become human targets, which could lead to bullying.
Although there is a problem with this game, there must be a way to come to an agreement. This agreement varies from banning dodgeball, or keeping dodge ball. School districts in states including Texas, Virginia, Maine, and Massachusetts banned the game years ago. Some schools, however, still keep dodge ball in their physical education class.
In an article called “Dodgeball Has No Place in Our Schools” written by Ken Reed, he simply states, “Dodgeball turns children into human targets, allow for bullying, and is humiliating for some students. Moreover, many students are eliminated from the game early, resulting in limited physical activity during the PE class period.” As many others agree, dodge ball doesn’t always lead to students becoming a human target. Just like any other sport, there is always an official watching over you. When things become too physical there is a penalty for it. For example, in basketball, players receive fouls, and after so many fouls they have to sit out of the game. When dodgeball is played at school your teacher is always watching the game. Therefore if they would see any bullying or violence they would stop the game.
Another article called, “Physical Benefits of Dodgeball,” by Van Thompson shows why dodge ball has a more positive effect, rather than a negative. For example he says, “Players running across a court don’t just run; they also have to dodge balls. This can improve their balance. Successful players don’t slip when they see a ball coming their way, and they learn to maintain an upright posture that reduce their risk of falling.” This gives players abilities to learn unlike any other sport. Also it states, “Dodge ball is a game that teaches teamwork.” Dodge ball is a game that teaches ability and good life skills.
In conclusion dodge ball should not be banned from schools. You have teachers watching over you while you play this game, and it would not become too violent. It gives you many lessons to learn such as teamwork, and physical ability.
Not many activities give you such a positive outcome.

To be honest, I’m pretty bias about the situation because Dodgeball can be used in a negative and positive way. The negative is kids being competitive and using curse words… i know this because i used to be like this. Kids minds are very competitive and they get mad ,if they think someone else is :winning”. The positive outcome is it helps kids interact with others and it helps people create sportsmanship. Like helping people grabs Dodgeballs or even helping people up when their down.

It should be banned! Anyone against it is either a bad parent or just ignorant. It is a known fact that all school districts intentionally leave out the not so fortunate students. Kids and schools discriminate against the working class & mentally ill… all this game does is let kids intentionally bully other less fortunate kids. Thinking that your kid will grow up a wimp without dodgeball in his/her life is simply stupid. These parents obviously don’t know everything like they assume they do. Maybe take your time to read about students bullying those less fortunate just because it makes them feel smarter. Oh that’s right you middle class trash don’t give a crap about anyone but yourselves.

People don’t use their heads enough. I mean really! How can DODGEBALL of all things be dangerous?! My gym class almost convinced the gym teacher to play dodgeball again, and I know he and everyone else in our school loves it, but unfortunately he was forced to say no. I know nothing about parenting, but I know this; parents who say dodgeball is dangerous, you have ruined my life and future generations to come. I hope you get sense knocked into you, this horrid claim that dodgeball is dangerous is just stupid junk. I wish every person reading this knows that I speak the truth, as well as everyone who agrees with me. We are humans! We need adventure! We need Dodgeball!

But Dodge Ball is used in a way to bully younger kids so whether you agree or disagree with banning dodge ball teachers are still going to say that dodge ball is too violent

The more we try to protect the kids and dont give them some healthy challenges is going to be like feeding them to the wolves when they are let out.
I am 12 and even I think that this is so dumb. Whats next wrapping kids in BUBBLE WRAP most likely

I don’t understand why you think a fun activity would be so harmful? It has been a playground activity for 200 years now. It’s ridiculous how some people think it’s “too” violent, it’s a damn ball. Why would you want your kids to grow up to be little wimps and can’t even face real life situations, pathetic. I know what these people and parents want they want their kids to grow up in a cozy womb of non competition, where everybody is sharing and caring and little Red riding hood and the big, bad wolf set up a commune. I’m 14 years old and even i can’t stand this. Real world people.

No one can be bullied because if you are hit you’re out and they can’t hit you without being obvious to a supervisor.

Dodgeball is the best sport ever

Dodgeball should not be banned because using softer balls would make a difference. According to Ryan ,from Newsday.com,”I think it should be played in school because everyone enjoys the game and most schools use the safe foam balls instead of the hard, bouncy and dangerous kickballs. The softer game balls will make it safer for kids”. One can see from this that when you use foam balls it will help make the game of dodgeball safer.

I can testify that that does work because at my school, we call it “warball” but we us soft “gatorskin” balls. they are soft and do not hurt when you are hit. I am 14 and in 9th grade and I have a big P.E class full of sport kids. The “strongest” sport kid sniped my friend who is one of the “weak” kids in the face with his glasses on. They did not break, he was fine. There was cease fire and we made sure he was ok and out of the danger zone. This happened while there was no adult around too. This game dose not encourage aggressive behavior, it is just a fun game to keep you on your toes and your heart pumping. And if you don’t want to play, you can sit out. But when people do sit out, it’s always the sport kids. The “weak” kids always play, despite how “bad” they are.
