The struggle of reaching out

Sometimes we need to have a little empathy rather than a competition for sympathy.

I hate that mental disorders have turned into a competition.

You can’t discuss an eating habit without someone mentioning that they have survived off green tea for three weeks and weighed four stones.  You can’t discuss your depression because another person has been in a psych ward multiple times and they’re only twelve.   You can’t talk about addiction because someone else will ramble on about how they’ve been battling a drug addiction for eighteen years.

Every time you even come close to wanting to reach out, you know there is no point because in other people’s eyes you are NEVER sick enough.  There is always someone worse off than you.

That’s the problem with society.  It seems that we lack empathy.  No matter what, there is a competition for sympathy, whether it be on social media or in person.

This ‘oh suck it up you’re not as bad as me/them’ HAS to stop.  You never know how much a problem is affecting someone because even though it may seem like nothing to you, their entire world could be crashing down on top of them.

The bad part is that they just have to wait until they’ve either figured it out on their own, or have become so sick that people cannot deny it anymore.

By then it’s usually too late.
