Track teams lose opener

The Bellwood-Antis boys and girls track and field teams dropped a pair of meets to Bedford in their dual meet opener Tuesday at Memorial Stadium.

The boys fell 96-54 while the girls went down 83-67.

Both teams had several first-place finishers in the losses. For the Blue Devils, Joe Wertz was a double-winner, claiming victory in both the shot put and discus. Wertz won the shot with a toss of 48 feet, 8 inches and took the discuss with a heave of 116 feet, 9 inches, 10 feet further than the nearest competitor.

Zach Mallon was able to come away with a win in the triple jump with a leap of 41 feet, 6 inches to go along with a second-place finish in the long jump.

On the track, the 1600 relay team of Gavin Ridgway, Cooper Keen, Sean Mallon and Kenny Robinson won in a time of 3:45.

For the Lady Devils, sophomore Lexi Lovrich won both the 1600 and the 3200. Lovrich won each handily, finishing the 1600 in 5:48 and the 3200 in 12:54.

Sicily Yingling was a winner in the 400 with a time of 1:08.

In the field, Lydia Worthing won both the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches) and the pole vault (8 feet, 6 inches).

Rebecca Burns earned a win in the discus with a throw of 89 feet, 9 inches, while Raven Criscitello won the triple jump with a jump of 27 feet, 10 inches.
