The Blue Devil baseball team has had its best season since COVID, making the playoffs for the first time in 5 years and picking up some huge wins in the process.
Senior Camden Swogger has been a vital part of that resurgence. He is batting .400 with 4 home runs to go along with 19 RBI’s and he has a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000 while playing one of the toughest positions in the sport, catcher.
For those efforts Cam has been named this week’s Athlete of the Week.
Swogger has been playing baseball for over 15 years and has been playing at Bellwood for his entire high school career. Swogger plans to attend Delgado Community College in Louisiana and continue to play division 1 JUCO baseball.
The B-A baseball team has had a very successful season this year, notching a winning record and beating Mo Valley 12-2 in the first round of the playoffs.
Swogger was a major factor offensively against the knights with two hits and a pair of RBI.
The team is hitting its stride at the right time and Swogger says some of his team goals are to ” win district 6 and bring home the gold for B-A.”
Cam has been a leader and role model throughout his baseball career for Bellwood, but he doesn’t see it that way.
“I put the team before myself and I just try to improve my leadership every day,” he said.
In the offseason, when most athletes are enjoying their summer, Swogger is in the gym or playing summer ball to improve his hitting and strength, and that work has factored into his incredible numbers this season.
“My stats display all of the time I’ve spent in the gym, cages and on the field during off-season,” said Swogger.
But it’s difficult to measure Swogger’s contributions in numbers alone. Having played high-level travel baseball most of his career, there isn’t much he hasn’t seen or experienced on the diamond.
“Cam is beyond a statistical leader for our team. He has been playing since his freshman year, and his veteran leadership has helped us so much,” said fellow senior Eli Moser, who has played with Swogger his entire B-A career.
Swogger, Moser and the rest of the team will try to keep the season rolling tonight when they play Bishop McCort in the District 6 2A semifinals at Point Stadium in Johnstown at 6.
Congratulations Cam on being this week’s Athlete of the Week
