ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Rebecca Burns

Terry McCaulley

Rebecca Bruns qualified for Districts this year in the discus.

Senior Rebecca Burns is the perfect example of a student athlete. She played volleyball in the fall, and she is also a part of the BA track/field team. Rebecca excels in the classroom as well, and recently she learned she would be the salutatorian of the class of 2021.

Rebecca has been named the BluePrint Athlete of the Week.

Rebecca was very excited for her senior season after it was canceled last year due to COVID.

“It was awful when the track season was canceled last year,” Rebecca explained. “The track team is so laid back and full of nice girls. I was especially disappointed that I missed out on working on my discus throw.

Rebecca put in some time during the offseason to get herself ready for both volleyball and track.

“I did volleyball clinics in the offseason,” Burns said. “The field events are not like track, where you can run to practice. There’s no opportunities to throw. However, I did go down to the school with my own personal discus and practiced every now and then.”

Rebecca’s personal goal for this season was to throw 90 feet in discus. She was only a few inches off of this mark, with her personal best being 89.9 feet.

Rebecca’s favorite thing about track is the people and the coaches.

“I love how sweet everyone is. The coaches are so easy going, and the girls always cheer each other on.”

Over the years at BA, Rebecca has put together a solid athletic career in volleyball and track. She even competed in districts this year in the discus,
