B-A freshmen expressed their commitment to graduate high school at a gown signing ceremony last week.

On Monday, August 28, the freshmen class at Bellwood-Antis signed a gown that showed they were committed to graduate.

During 8th period, freshmen went to the auditorium for an assembly sponsored by Jostens. Scott Geesey hosted the event for Jostens, informing the freshmen of the benefits of graduating high school.

I believe that (the ceremony) provides yet another opportunity to welcome the new 9th graders to the high school.

— Mr. Schreier

Ninth graders at B-A have been doing the Commitment to Graduate assembly and gown signing since 2015.

“The assembly and signing are important to me.  I believe that it provides yet another opportunity to welcome the new 9th graders to the high school.  The assembly encapsulates the importance of this transition to high school, specifically focusing on grades, credits, and involvement with the school community,” said High School Principal Mr. Richard Schreier.

Mr. Schreier said the actual act of signing a gown provides a tangible model representing each student’s commitment to do their best in high school and graduate with a diploma in four years.

On graduation night in 2027, Seniors will pull the gown out to remind the students of their commitment.

“I really like that as a full-circle moment,” Mr. Schreier said.

Freshman Bryson Hescox said the event was worth while.

“The assembly brought everyone together to show each other the commitment to graduate,” Bryson Hescox said.
