Senior first baseman Zach Pier has been crushing it this season for the baseball team.
Through 10 games, he’s hitting with .465, with a total of 12 hits, 11 RBI’s, and 3 homeruns. Leading into Friday’s game against Central Cambria, Zach was 7 for 11 with 2 walks, 4 hit by pitches, and 2 homeruns in his previous three games. He then went out against the Red Devils and ripped three hits, including a double.
On top of all that, Zach has remained almost perfect in the field with a fielding percentage of .978, and only has one error on the season.
“It feels good to see statistical success, but it also helps me continue to want to be a leader and try my best to help the team in any way possible,” said Zach.
Humble, yet honest.
While staying on top of his game, Zach has continued to work hard to push himself as a player. He has been playing baseball for twelve years now, and loves the game of baseball more than anything.
“The last two years, I have really tried to put in serious effort at practice and focus on certain goals that drive me to get better and play better,” said Zach.
Zach’s success is spreading over more than just himself. His improvements are being recognized by his teammates as well as his coaches.
“Zach has been consistent at the plate this season—he is seeing the ball well and hitting the ball hard…one of our statistical leaders offensively as well as one of our team leaders in general. He’s been a solid glove at first base, and overall, he works hard and is very coachable. He put the work in during the off season, and it is showing early in the season,” said Coach Partner.
Along with slamming home runs, Zach has focused on words from his coaches to better his batting approach.
“The best coaching advice I have received is ‘hands back weight back,’” said Zach. “Another great piece of coaching advice I have received is to just have fun playing the game.”
Zach’s approach to the game of baseball is modeled after one of baseball’s current sluggers Juan Soto. “Soto is great at drawing walks, but also hits with a lot of power,” said Zach.
Unfortunately, Zach doesn’t plan on playing any baseball after high school, but will finish out his years in Federation League.
After high school, Zach plans on attending college for Business or Finance, but has not yet decided on where he will attend. Currently, his favorite class here at Bellwood is Fundamentals of American Law because of Mr. McNaul’s exciting personality.
Hanging out with friends is something Zach cherishes most.
“Outside of school I like to go to the gym, hang out with friends, and play MLB the show,” said Zach. His friendly personality is something that many recognize, and he is going to miss being around his friends once he graduates here in May.
