Mrs. Tara Naylor, a second grade teacher at Myers Elementary, has been healing from a very serious injury for about three months and has she taken it like a champ.
On July 25, Mrs. Naylor tore her left hamstring while participating in a moms sprinting contest at her daughters’ softball practice. All three hamstring muscles tore completely off her pelvis.
She had to get surgical repair on August 26 and could not put any weight on her left foot for 6 weeks, which meant she could not walk for a while. That kept her home from teaching action, but she returned last Monday and was very relieved.
“I was so happy to come back to teaching and being where I love with the people I love,” Naylor stated.
Post surgery, Mrs. Naylor spent weeks in tough recovery. At first she had to keep the leg completely stabilized in a brace at a 90-degree angle for several week. She was then able to release the brace 30-degrees in intervals of two weeks.
For 2-3 weeks before returning to school, she was in atrophy prevention therapy to help her heal faster. One week before her return, Mrs. Naylor was finally able to get off crutches, place weight on her foot, and walk. Now, she goes to therapy 1 or 2 times a week to focus on flexibility and strength training.
While Mrs. Naylor was out, Karlie Feather, who is a 2020 B-A graduate, took over and helped tremendously.
”Ms. Feather my substitute was such a big help with documenting all of the kids progress while I was gone. I couldn’t have asked for a better substitute for my class,” Mrs. Naylor said.
Mrs. Naylor also noted the tremendous support and love she felt from her principal and staff members during her time off and during her return.
“Mrs. Naylor is one of the best teachers. (While she was gone) she actually reached out to me more about the kids than herself,” Mr. Stinson said.
He said that adjusting to Mrs. Naylor’s absence was hard, but Ms. Feather helped out with everything and is an incredible substitute teacher.
Since Mrs. Naylor’s students adore her so much, they were constantly asking about her health and making sure she was okay.
While coming back to school hasn’t been been easy for Mrs. Naylor, luckily there are always people on standby for mobility or for support.
Mr. Stinson has said that Mrs. Naylor is extremely strong, and everyone is so happy to see her back and healthy.
