It’s difficult to beat a team more than once in a season, let alone three times, but that’s just what the Bellwood-Antis girls basketball team was charged with doing last Wednesday.
The Lady Blue Devils played against the Central Dragons for the third time this season, having already defeated the Lady Dragons in December in the Fred B. Miller Holiday Basketball Tournament and again last month in Bellwood.
This time, the game was played at Central, and Bellwood-Antis once more secured the win. The final score ended up being 55-46.
The top performer for B-A was junior Lilly Gerwert, who had a very impressive 27 points and 13 rebounds. 16 of her points were scored in the first half. Gerwert also made nine of her 10 free throws. Freshman guard Karlie Sweigert also stepped up big with a new career-high of 12 points.
“We’ve been needing to start faster and get a quick lead on teams so we‘re going to be working towards that,” senior Leigha Clapper said before the game.
B-A did a good job of starting fast, getting to a 14-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Early on in the game, the Lady Blue Devils suffered an injury from one of their starters, Jenna Norton. Norton experienced a leg injury in the first quarter. It was a costly loss for B-A, which is already plahying without starting point guard Marissa Cacciotti.
Central never gave up in this game. They hit a total of 10 3-pointers as a team, seven of them being in the second half. Four of these three-pointers came from senior Marah Dickson.
Since this big win, B-A has lost their last two games, but at 9-11 they are still poised to secure the No. 4 seed in the upcoming District 6 2A playoffs.
Their next game will be played at home against Philipsburg-Osceola on Saturday at 3.
