Last week, Mr. Partner’s 10th classes completed “decades” research papers and projects where they were asked to conduct deep dives into particular time periods.
Some of the students along with Mr. P came up with an idea of a decades walk-through gallery for display in the media center. It was almost like a museum exhibit of each decade from the 1950s through the 2010s.
Students prepped for the unit with decade slang, trivia, and discussions of some of the worst and best decades to live in.
Mr. Partner said the idea of a gallery originally came from a collaboration he had several years ago with retired B-A librarian Susan Zong.
“A formal English teacher/librarian Susan Zong) and I came up with this idea when we were in the library over 10 years ago and found two sets of decades encyclopedias,” Mr. P said. “We wanted to use these resources in some type of assignments, so we came up with this decade paper project. When I returned to the high school, this assignment was one definitely was excided to bring back and assign to my English classes.”
As a way of involving the entire school, the task was for the staff to bring in a item or two they would consider a blast from the past, like a board game, a collectible, or an electronic device.
“I think the staff did a good job to bring in all of these cool artifacts,” said Mr. P.
There were tables set up for this project in the media center. The farthest decade back was in the 1950s.
Some items included toys like wrestling dolls and GI Joes from the 1980s, old cameras, magazines, and a type writer.
