B-A’s baseball team seemed to be on a hot streak after winning their 3rd consecutive game over Glendale on April 2, but with weather playing havoc with the schedule, the Blue Devils have been on a very long break, which has lasted almost 2 weeks.
The Devils will get back at it today, when both the baseball and softball team attempt to get the gears of their season turning once more.
The Blue Devil baseball team and softball team will play challenging Laurel Highlands games against Bellefonte. Both teams play at home.
The Blue Devils face teams coming up that they felt very confident to play. The Reed Raiders come into the game 1-4.
As B-A is a little over a third of their season, they have shown very promising aspects both at the plate and on the field. Right now, Bellwood is sitting with an overall record of 4-3 and a conference record of 1-3. Over the course of 7 games, that has been enough time for some key players to stand out. One of the key players this season is sophomore Jackson Dorminy. Over 7 games, Dorminy has acquired a very respectable batting average of .478 and a on-base percentage (OBP) of .409. Over 23 at-bats, Dorminy scored 9 runs, batted in 9 runs (RBI), and is leading the team with 11 hits. Matt Berkowitz and Camden Swogger on the other hand have also played very valuable parts this season both contributing homers. Berkowitz leads the team in RBI’s while Swogger is tied with Dorminy for most stolen bases.
Freshman Landon Sneath (.364) and junior Camden Swogger (.391) have also sparked B-A’s offense, with batting averages over .360.
Defensively, B-A has held its opponents fairly well, allowing 31 runs over 7 games. Zach Gonzalez has really stepped up for the Blue Devils on the mound, holding down an earned run average (ERA) of 2.62. Gonzalez has pitched a total of 10.2 innings, and although he has had slight control issues, giving up 11 walks, he’s made batters pay and has dominated on the mound so far. Out of those 10 innings Gonzalez has been able to tack on some good stats, only allowing 5 hits, and 6 runs, after facing a total of 54 batters. Gonzalez has already tied his amount of strike outs from last year totaling up 21 K’s.
While B-A softball hasn’t been on as long of a break as baseball, they still have not been pleased with the recent weather conditions. After performing phenomenally over Bedford earlier this month, pounding out a 14-5 win on April 4, the Lady Devils haven’t had a chance to shred any other opponents.
The Lady Blue Devils currently hold an overall record of 2-4 and a conference record of 1-2. Although they didn’t get the most appealing start to a season, their confidence level only went up. After their last game they had won two in a row and seemed to be putting the puzzle pieces together and clicking as one unit.
One player who hasn’t failed to stand out this season is junior Parker Martin. She leads the team in 6 major statistics including batting average, on-base Percentage, runs, hits, slugging percentage, and doubles. Over 23 plate appearances there has only been 1 at-bat where Martin hasn’t gotten on base or put the ball in play.
Ava Moore and London McKee also have their batting average above the .300 mark, both batting .333.
Now begins a long stretch filled with game after game for the boys, though the girls schedule remains a bit lighter. The Blue Devils will play four games in the next six days, while the Lady Devils play three in the next eight days.
The girls begin their game today at 4 while the boys start is 4:30.
