Trying to find ways to get a boost on your future career while in high school can be difficult.
However, programs like Skills USA can change that. Skills USA is a workforce development program that empowers students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders and responsible community members.
Recently, BAHS students attended a Skills USA competition in Altoona and placed their way to an even bigger future. The contest played out in several venues including the Blair County Convention Center, Stuckey’s Automotive, Carpenter’s Union, GACTC, and Allegheny Trucking and Roundhouse.
The four students who attended the event – Chase Bradford, Kenzie Reed, Hayden Laird, and Sadie Rinker – came away with awards and top placings.
Chase earned a gold medal in the category of Automotive Refinishing Technology to advance to the state level.
Kenzie, who is studying health services at the Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center, was part of a four-person team that took home a silver medal in the Health Knowledge Bowl.
“This benefits me by helping me build confidence, learn from my mistakes, and develop the skills needed to do better in the future,” said Kenzie.
Sadie and Hayden each earned bronze medals in the fields of Nail Care and Cosmetology, respectively.
Skills USA, was a fun experience for those who attended it this year.
“It helps me become better at what I’m doing and learn new things,” Hayden said. However, she says she needs to “practice more before the competition and take my time and make everything look really neat.”
B-A principal Mr. Richard Schreier praised the impressive showing by students from Bellwood-Antis.
“I am proud of the talented Bellwood-Antis students who participate in the Skills USA program,” he said. “The ability to showcase their skills and dedication to their trade is impressive.”
Students who participate in Skills USA can obtain scholarships, tools of the trade, and even job offers.
In all, 33 students from schools across Blair County earned medals at the competition. Gold medalists, Chase Bradford included, will compete in the state competition in Hershey on April 2-4.
