Last week five BluePrint writers were recognized for their outstanding work by the Pennsylvania Press Club.
Each year the club holds a journalism contest seeking the best student news writers in Pennsylvania. This year the contest featured a record 169 entries from 17 different schools. The schools that entered ranged from the Philadelphia to Pittsburgh areas.
B-A had students earn recognition in 4 different categories.
In the category of sports story, Olivia Hess earned 2nd place for her story on Hailey Loupe making history for the wrestling program by becoming the first female to register a win on the boys team. Jordan Hescox also placed in the category. His story about Bellwood taking charge in player safety with advanced helmet technology called Guardians finished in third place.
Morgan Kienzle got herself a second place finish in the category of sports photo. Her winning photo was called “Backyard Brawl Sack.” Morgan also had a honorable mention in the news or feature photo category.
To round out the recognitions, Hess, Chloe Brown, and Kate Wallace each got honorable mentions in the category of news story.
BluePrint advisor, Mr. Kerry Naylor, was impressed with his students for being amongst some of the top student writers in PA.
“Every year this contest brings out some of the best student writers from the best high school publications in Pennsylvania, and this year had more entries than ever, so it’s very competitive,” he said.
He also said it was gratifying to see the students get their well-deserved recognition.
“Olivia, Chloe, Jordan, Kate, and Morgan should be very proud of themselves,” said Mr. Naylor. “ They have all been major contributors to the BluePrint’s success, so this is like icing on the cake.”
