The Blue Devils opened the season strong Friday night with a 51-12 win over the Penns Valley Rams. Bellwood dominated on both sides of the ball, guiding to a clear cut victory.
Bellwood started off hot with sophomore Chase Plummer’s 38-yard run to the house. The Blue Devils offense carried that momentum for the rest of the game with some help by the defense.
The Rams soon responded with a touchdown of their own. Junior Colin Gibbons countered the scoring in the 1st quarter running past the Rams defense for a 33-yard touchdown. The Blue Devils then clicked on a 30-yard pass from Holden Schreier to Cayden Pellegrine to take a commanding 19-6 lead.
Bellwood continued its offensive surge in the 2nd quarter after sophomore Bradyn Partner broke free for a 39-yard rushing touchdown. The Blue Devils defense did its part too. Ethan Sharff strip sacked Penns Valley quarterback Koltin Shawver. Christian Jennings recovered the fumble in the backfield for a 24-yard score.
The Blue Devils entered the half with a 32-6 lead over Penns Valley. Opening the second half Holden Schreier found Cayden Pellegrine once again in space for a 28-yard touchdown. The Rams were then able to find the end zone but missed their PAT. To wrap up the 3rd quarter, the Blue Devils found themselves with another scoring opportunity. Bradyn Partner took the handoff for 22-yards to the end zone.
The 4th quarter began with a 44-12 Bellwood advantage. Colin Gibbons quickly picked up a 45-yard gain down the sidelines for the longest rush of the game. Curtis Shedlock then capped off Bellwood’s scoring with an 18-yard rush for a final of 51-12.
Senior quarterback Holden Schreier stated, Tthis win gave us confidence, and we plan to continue to build off of it.”
Bellwood ultimately shared the wealth with 6 different players finding the end zone. The offense gained a total of 471 yards, while Bellwood’s defense was able to limit the Rams to just 164 total yards.
When asked how this year’s offseason preparation differed from last year Schreier mentioned, “We did lots of strenuous workouts during summer conditioning… everyone bought in.”
The Blue Devils now prepare to take on Westmont Hilltop, Friday the 30th. Westmont is coming off a 28-7 loss against Bedford as Bellwood looks to stay hot.
