“Teaching at Bellwood has always been a goal of mine. This is where my heart has always been.”
After a long journey, Mrs. Gwen Schreier finally accomplished a big goal of hers: to teach at her alma mater, Bellwood-Antis. She was hired this year to teach ELA in the middle school.
Mrs. Schreier grew up and graduated in Bellwood in 1993, before going on to get her teaching degree at Juniata College.
“When I returned to Bellwood as a teacher, it felt like I had finally come home,” she said.
While a new teacher at Bellwood-Antis, Mrs. Schreier is no rookie. She previously taught 3rd grade at Pleasant Valley Elementary for eight years.
When asked about the challenges of teaching, she said that teaching can require a lot of work outside the school day, and that since she is teaching a new grade and new subjects; she has a lot of prep work to do.
Mrs. Schreier and her husband, Principal Richard Schreier, have had three kids come through Bellwood-Antis: Chance, who graduated last year, Reid, who is in ninth grade, and Holden, a senior who is the quarterback on the varsity football team.
Mrs. Schreier said she always watches the games intently. “I am very proud of Holden and his teammates on all of their accomplishments so far this season…during games I am definitely nervous and my heart rate soars!” she said.
As for her favorite part of teaching, Mrs. Schreier said that she loves seeing students take pride in their work and working hard to grasp new concepts.
Mr. Schreier, who can now go to work with his wife every day, said: ”I am proud of Mrs. Schreier. She has proven throughout her career to be an excellent teacher. The Bellwood-Antis School District is blessed to add her to our teaching staff. On a personal level, I am happy for her. She has had the goal to teach in our home district for a while, and the right opportunity presented itself this summer.”
