The Blue Devils stayed home Friday night with a lopsided 28-0 win over Philipsburg-Osceola on Homecoming.
Bellwood-Antis’s offense thrived both on the ground and in the air, while the Mountaineers struggled to find rhythm early, which ultimately carried over to the second half.
Along with the Homecoming victory, Gianna Juart was crowned Homecoming queen, and B-A students and community members were able to present a check for $5,260 to Sideline Cancer to support Trisha Beeler and Lacey Hanna.
B-A improved to 5-1 while the Mounties dropped to 2-4.
The Mounties started the game with possession but quickly turned the ball over on downs. BA’s offense picked up where they were last week. Holden Schreier hit Bradyn Partner from 13 yards out to begin the scoring, and Colin Gibbons ran up the middle for two more creating an 8-0 lead.
The Blue Devils defense locked down any of PO’s threats, controlling the majority of the clock in the first half.
The second quarter kicked off with a quick Blue Devil drive. Schreier found sophomore Ethan Shawley on a short pass near Bellwood’s sideline, and Shawley was then able to get past three different defenders before racing for a 69-yard touchdown. It was Shawley’s second long touchdown reception in the last two games.
The Blue Devils converted for two providing a 16-0 advantage.
Defensively, BA was able to limit PO’s offense to 226 total yards in the first half.
The second half opened with a long Bellwood-Antis drive, which took nearly seven minutes off the clock and consisted of 13 plays. The Blue Devils entered the red zone, and on a 3rd-and-11 Schreier found Cayden Pellegrine on a screen pass for an 18-yard touchdown. BA was unable to convert for two but nonetheless tacked onto a 22-0 lead.
Schreier was 10 for 18 passing for 216 yards and three touchdowns, setting a new career high in passing yards.
”Our receivers ran good routes and the line blocked well up front which helped make the big plays happen,” Schreier credited.
Bellwood-Antis’s defense continued to do its part not allowing the Mountaineers to finish their drives. Mason Ott brought down Philipsburg’s QB, Archer Baughman for his first sack of the year. Jeffrey Waite was also able to pick off Baughman, continuing the momentum on the Blue Devil sideline.
The fourth quarter followed the same script. Philipsburg-Osceola could not piece together their drives downfield. With under three minutes left in the game, Pellegrine found space on the ground for a 60-yard touchdown. This capitalized a 28-0 Blue Devil win.
“Winning 28-0 definitely gives us confidence … we have to stay humble and take care of our business when looking ahead at BG,” Pellegrine commented.
The Blue Devils are now 5-1 as they approach a crucial part of their season. BA now travels to Mansion Park Saturday where they take on the undefeated Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders. BG has scored 30 or more points in four of their last six matchups.
