The Hollidaysburg Tigers and the Tyrone/Bellwood-Antis soccer team on Tuesday played a late night game that started later then expected at 8:30 pm. in a battle for the District 6 3A championship.
Neither team could score, and by the end of regulation the defensive struggle was knotted at 0-0, but after a long night on the Phillipsburg turf, it was Hollidaysburg senior Andrew Chestney scored the goal to secure the win over the Eagles.
The Tigers won 1-0, once again denying Tyrone/Bellwood-Antis a District championship. The Eagles lost in the title game in 2020 as well.
This was Hollidaysburg’s third win over the Eagles this season and each loss for the Golden Eagles has been by 1 goal.
“It was a great game. We love playing big games,” said Tyrone coach Alex Bartlett, whose team had gone into double overtime to defeat Bellefonte in the semifinals. “No one likes to lose them. It stinks. But I told the kids how proud I was of them, and we will be back in the same game next season.”
Tyrone/Bellwood-Antis seniors were Bellwood Devon Nardelli and Tyrone’s Rowan Moore, so the majority of players who competed in the championship game will return. Add to that a strong class of freshman who helped the junior high team to an undefeated season earlier this month.
The Eagles went 13-7 and were 6-3 at home and 7-4 away.
