Aerosmith sang a song about love in an elevator. How about fear in an elevator?
That’s exactly what 14 Bellwood-Antis students experienced last week when their elevator stalled during a field trip in Pittsburgh.
On December 18, Bellwood-Antis students were invited to Kamin Science Center for a Sports Medicine/Science Career and Tech Day. The students invited were the top 10 of the junior class along with anyone who had a job shadow involving sports medicine.
Soon after arriving, BA’s students piled 14 people into the first-floor elevator and were moving up to the top floor when suddenly the elevator stopped in between the first and second floors.
After the laughter and lightheartedness faded, students realized they were really stuck. After approximately 10 minutes of panic, junior Olivia Rishel decided to use the call button on the elevator to call for some help.
After a couple of no answers, the students finally got a response informing them that a mechanic will be there to help in around 20 minutes. The students had now been in the elevator for around 50 minutes and finally felt the elevator starting back up again.
The elevator doors opened, and when the fresh air finally hit, the students were relieved to have been saved.
Blake Pennington, one of the students that were stuck, said it was a scary moment she won’t forget,
“I started to panic when we couldn’t contact anyone in the elevator because it was getting hot and I was worried about everyone’s safety,” she said. “It was a little bit of a scary experience, but I’m glad we all ended up being okay. Definitely a memory!”
The students then participated in the activities that were set up for the day, joined by students from Berlin Brothersvalley and North Allegheny.
They talked with many professionals in their fields and asked many questions about their day-to-day life or their college path, and they were invited to watch an informational video through the planetarium.
To finish the day, students got to tour the submarine located in the Ohio River beside the Center.
Overall the students had a very informational day and learned a lot despite the scare of starting the day trapped in an elevator.
