Seven Bellwood-Antis Middle School students placed second out of 5 schools at Saturday’s 2016 Math Counts Competition that took place at Penn State Altoona.

Kenny Robison, Caedon Poe, Zach Mallon, Cassidy Troutman, Emma Corrado, Zach Amato, and Jack Luensmann put their mathematics skills to the ultimate test.

“Bellwood was very well represented,” said Math Counts Advisor Mrs. Kathy Taylor. “We competed against some pretty big schools. Even though we’re a very young team, we did well. We were pleasantly surprised to place second.”

There were several different rounds in this competition, each one having a specific level of difficulty. In the countdown round, a student had to stand in front of the entire audience, go head-to-head with their competition, and answer a challenging math question without a calculator in 45 seconds.

Kenny Robison excelled in the countdown round where he placed seventh overall out of a total 28.

The students also completed a 40-minute, 30-question Sprint Round, 6-minute, 2-question Target Rounds, and a 10-question, 20-minute Team Round.

The first two rounds determine the top 10 finalists who compete head-to-head in a Speed round of problems similar to those at the beginning of the competition.
