The Bellwood-Antis speech team had its first meet last week at Bishop McCort and had two top speakers place.

Sophomore Emma Corrado placed first in extemporaneous and junior Haley Campbell placed second in humorous interpretation.

Campbell’s piece was a musical about history, starting with the Big Bang.

“I bombed the first round, but I was able to make up for it over the next two,” said Campbell. “I’m not as confident with my piece as I was last year, but I hope to do well with it.”

In extemporaneous, Corrado receives a new speech topic at each meet and is required to formulate a speaking performance on sight.

“I’m glad I did well this time, but every meet is a new experience because you never really know what topic you’re going get in a round. Definitely nothing feels guaranteed.”

Corrado and  Campbell both went to Nationals last year and are fulfilling expectations.

The team is coached by Mrs. Sally Padula.
