Kelly Leamer, center, celebrates with her teammates after getting her 1,000th assist last week against West Branch.

Last week, Bellwood-Antis senior Kelly Leamer broke the Bellwood-Antis all-time career assists record for girl’s varsity volleyball.

The Lady Blue Devils lost the match to West Branch 3 sets to none, but it did little to damper the team’s feelings for Leamer and her accomplishment.

“My teammates are all my best friends,” says Leamer.

Kelly has been playing volleyball since she was in 4th grade, and is the team’s setter.

Did she ever imagine herself breaking this record?

“No, I didn’t even have any of these goals in mind until my coach pulled me aside last year before my 1,000 assist,” Leamer said.

Until last week, the record was held my Pam Taylor since 1998 at 1,181 assists.

“This accomplishment is rewarding because my hard work has paid off,” said Leamer.

Throughout her sports career, there’s no doubt that Kelly has had many fans cheering her name, but she says her biggest supporters have got to be her family.

“My family always supports me. But especially my older sister Katy, because she always pushes me to be my best.”

Katy was a record-setter in her own right, scoring 1,000 points for the B-A basketball before graduating in 2013.

The volleyball team is currently 5-1.
