Over the long break for the holidays, the Lady Blue Devils participated in the Fred B. Miller Memorial Holiday Basketball Tournament.
Bellwood-Antis played their first-round game against a tough Tyrone team. B-A ended up losing the game, with a final score of 50-38.
Even though the Lady Blue Devils lost, senior Jenna Norton and junior Lilly Gerwert both had solid performances. Norton had a total of 11 points, and Gerwert had a double-double. Gerwert finished with an impressive 18 points and 20 rebounds.
Bellwood-Antis moved on to play in a consolation game against the Central Dragons. B-A won in a hard fought battle, after being down by nine at halftime. The final score was 52-42.
Gerwert and Norton both came in with great performances to help secure the win. Gerwert ended the game with 22 points, and Norton with 10 points.
”We need to push the ball up the floor harder and play better transition basketball defensively,” Norton says. “We also need to stay more disciplined in our offensive sets to get better looks than we’ve been getting.”
The Lady Blue Devils are now 5-4 this season after the tournament.
The boys saw some improvement over the weekend. Despite losing both their games, they put up a fight against Penn Cambria losing by 15 and came back even stronger the next day. On Saturday they faced Claysburg-Kimmel in an exciting matchup that came down to the wire. Though B-A ended up losing 60-57, they still proved to themselves and to their fans that they have what it takes to compete in big games.
Senior point guard Holden Schreier is coming off a broken foot that he had during this past football season. He has been a big part in the team’s improvement, as he led his team in scoring on his first game back.
“It feels good to finally be back playing,” said Schreier. “Even though we haven’t come out on the right side of a game yet, we’re making progress playing together.”
Both teams got better overall which is a good sign for our girls’ and boys’ basketball programs. They are playing a double-header against Chestnut Ridge on Friday night. The boys’ team plays at 6, and the girls’ team plays at 7:30. Good luck to the players and coaches!
