As a two year starter for varsity, sophomore Maya Plummer has gained a lot of exposure and experience playing with the upper-classmen on the Tyrone/Bellwood-Antis girls soccer team, helping to build her into a strong leader for the next two years of her varsity career.
Playing on the right and left wing, Plummer has recorded 7 goals, 1 assist, and 15 points so far for the soccer team. She leads the team in goals per match, overall goals, and points.
There are plenty of challenges Plummer has faced this season, including missing two games for injury. Another is simply playing at another school as part of a co-op, but she has handled all those obstacles well.
“It’s definitely harder that it’s in Tyrone, and if it was in Bellwood, it would be easier, but it’s not that bad since it isn’t super far away,” she said.
Another challenge, she said, was “trying not to get discouraged” during tough times in the season, which for the Lady Eagles included a 6-game losing streak after opening 1-0-1.
Plummer also plays basketball and participates on the track and field team.
After a rocky start, the Lady Eagles (5-10-3) finished strong and even tied Hollidaysburg in their final regular season game. The Lady Tigers are the No. 1 seed in District 6 3A and will face Tyrone/Bellwood-Antis in a rematch in the first round of the playoffs.
“Since we tied the No. 1 seed … my team has a lot more confidence,” Plummer said.
