Last Monday and Tuesday both Bellwood-Antis Basketball teams traveled the short distance to Tyrone Area High School to compete in the annual Fred B Miller Memorial Holiday Tournament.
The Lady Blue Devils were able to battle their way into the championship but fell to a very good Penn Cambria team, while the boys battled in two great games but came up short
Both teams had all tournament players.
Girls Basketball
In Monday’s game against Central, the Lady Blue Devils won in a back-and-forth game 46-43.
Senior Lilly Gerwert led the team with 23 points and sophomore Izzy Sloey seconded that with 6 points.
B-A trailed 11-5 early before taking a slim lead at halftime and holding off a strong charge by the Lady Dragons late in the game.
In Tuesday’s championship game against Penn Cambria, the Lady Devils Lost 57-39.
The team had a costly 35 turnovers due to Penn Cambria’s crushing defense.
Gerwert lead the team again with 16 and Sloey had 8 points.
Gerwert was able to notch an all-tournament team selection with both performances.
With those two games, the Lady Devils record improved to 6-3, and their next game is tonight against Central at the Bellwood-Antis High School gym.
Boys BasketballĀ
The Blue Devils came into the tournament on a 5-game skid and were hoping to break it against some very competitive teams.
The Blue-Devils dropped the first game against Claysburg-Kimmel 59-51.
The game came down to the final minutes and was tied for a bit, but Claysburg was able to push the pace on the Devils and keep the Devils from scoring.
Sophomore Quinn Leeper lead the Devils in scoring, dropping a solid 18 points.
In the consolation game, the Devils lost a close one 48-43 against Penn Cambria.
Once again, the game came down to the final minutes and once again Penn Cambria pushed the paced on the Devils and kept them from scoring. B-A had actually led by as many as 9 in the second quarter and were up by 6 at halftime.
Leaper and junior Jackson Dorminy led the team with 10 points each.
Leeper was also able to notch an all-tournament team berth.
The boys will be home tomorrow against Bishop Guilfoyle at Bellwood-Antis High School gym.
