Last Saturday, three Bellwood-Antis wrestlers competed in the girls District 6 wrestling tournament.
Seniors Juliette Cuevas and Elliana Patterson along with freshman Isabel Sweet were in action at the Altoona Fieldhouse.

Cuevas won two matches to get to the finals of the 100-pound weight class but came up short to unbeaten Curwensville freshman McKenzie Astorino in a 3-0 decision.
Cuevas, who made a run in the state tournament two seasons ago as a sophomore, did not wrestle for Bellwood last year; instead she joined a wrestling club and travelled to compete. She decided to come back to B-A for her senior season.
“I think I wrestled her pretty well. I think I definitely have some things to work on. My finals match was a fight; I was going up against a good girl. I’ve been waiting to wrestle her all year,” Cuevas said to the Altoona mirror.
Two years ago, Cuevas was placed in third in the district tournament before earning a regional title and placing 7th at states.
She’s now 21-3 on the season and has won 36 matches in her B-A career.
Coach Josh Hewitt had thoughts on the match.
“Juliette came up a little short, but we learned a lot in that match to make adjustments when she gets a chance at a rematch,” Coach Hewitt said.
Patterson competed in the tournament, as well, going 1-2 while battling a shoulder injury in the 118-pound weight class. She was pinned in her final match and ended the season 13-12. In her three-year career, Patterson logged 22 victories.
Sweet competed and went 2-2 wrestling at 136. She finished her first season wrestling for the Lady Blue Devils at 9-4.

“The girls team performed well at the District tournament,” Hewitt said. “I was hopeful we could get all three girls to the regional tournament. All three girls had some good wins. Girls wrestling is a fast-growing sport and it’s starting to take off locally, and it shows with the level of competition our girls faced.”
Overall, congratulations to the girls wrestlers for competing in Districts, and good luck to Juliette as she goes to regionals.
