Bellwood Antis art teacher Mrs. Leah McNaul and students from her classes are changing the mural in Bellwood-Antis High School downstairs hallway.
The mural has remained unchanged for more than a decade. It was originally painted by Tori Thomas in 2013.
“Mr. Schreier approached me last year about it, but we had so many projects going on that we had to wait till this year to accomplish it,” Mrs. McNaul said.
The original mural represented all of Bellwood-Antis sports and athletes in uniform. The new one will be an open book and a kindergartener turning into a senior with a fish spiraling up to show we’ve grown up together as a group.
“The inspiration for the picture was the (depiction of the) idea of the evolution of the monkey into a human, and we used that concept to show our kindergartener morphing into a senior,” said Mrs. McNaul.
The old mural will be something only twill be remembered by those students who attended B-A from 2013 until now, and Mrs. McNaul thinks the new one will be another generational mural too.
The students that are working on it with Mrs. McNaul, are strictly high school students, Mrs. McNaul said, because the high schoolers “get the vision.”
”These students are working hard as a team to get this done, with Mrs. McNaul leading them through the way with this big project,” said high school principal Mr. Richard Schreier.
