The Bellwood-Antis wrestling team has been on a tear recently.
After not winning a dual meet in over 59 matches, the team was able to break that skid with a win over United.
The Devils continued their success last week with a huge win over rival Tyrone, picking up a 37-36 win.
It was only the second tie in program history B-A was able to defeat the Golden Eagles,
The Blue Devils won the match on criteria D with the most bouts won (7-6) after the teams tied 36-36 in regulation.
Even though the Devils gave up three forfeits to the Golden Eagles, Bellwood needed four pins, a tech fall, major decisions and a decision to get the win.
“The win over Tyrone was big,” said first-year coach Josh Hewitt. “It feels good to be beat your school’s rival in any competition, especially one that’s been so one sided. Our team was definitely pumped and motivated going into the dual. I’m hopeful a win like that can motivate and inspire our wrestlers to continue there continued improvement.”
The match was set 36-12, but Tyrone was able to pick up 3 forfeits before Kyle Scott and John Eaken logged a win to set it to 36-36.
For Bellwood, BluePrint Athlete of the Week Nolan Hewitt picked up 3-2 decision win. Hewitt has been on a tear his freshman year having 13 wins to only 6 losses wrestling at 109.
Bryson Guyer, Tanner McElravy, Karter McCloskey, Sean McFarland, Mason Nagle and Chase Focht also picked up wins for the Devils. Guyer won by tech fall at 114 16-0 before McElravy got a pin at 121. McCloskey at 133 had another pin. After McFarland got a major decision at 139, Nagle (152) and Focht (160) had back to back pins to set up the exciting finish.
“Our entire team has improved since the beginning of the season. Our team is very young and there is definitely a learning curve to this sport,” Coach Hewitt said. “Wrestlers are putting in the work and picking up on details needed to succeed at this level. Their work in the practice room is showing with more individual wins and closing gaps on kids they’ve wrestled previously.”
