Bryson Guyer, a freshman wrestler with a bright future, has been one of the catalysts for B-A’s best dual meet season in years.
On Thursday, Guyer picked up his 12th win to help lead the Blue Devils to a win over Northern Becdford for their third dual meet victory this season.
Guyer is the BluePrint’s Athlete of the Week.
“Bryson is having a really good freshman season. He has one of the best individual records on the team,” said Coach Josh Hewitt. “Coming into a varsity sport as a freshman and contributing to the team since day one is something to be very proud of. I look forward to seeing big jumps in his wrestling in the years to come.”
Guyer is in the 114-pound weight class and is currently 12-9 after last night’s team victory. Against the Panthers, Guyer won by major decision over Eli Dutchcot, 11-2.
The Devils ended the dual meet season 3-12. Prior to this season, B-A’s wrestlers hadn’t won a dual meet since February 1, 2022.
The good thing is, there’s lots of young talent with a hopeful future like Guyer, who believes he has adapted very well to high school.
“It is a lot tougher, but I still believe I can compete. I think I am doing alright as a freshman,” he said.
Coach Hewitt said Bryson has been a big part of helping to turn the program around.
“I look forward that continuing in the years to come. I see Bryson continuing to improve each year and become a leader of our team over the next three seasons,” he said.
And obviously, he can compete, as shown by his winning record. He’s one of three wrestlers on B-A’s roster to post a .500 record, along with fellow freshman Nolan Hewitt and sophomore Chase Focht, so the future is bright.
“We have some new guys with high potential,” Guyer said.
Guyer, like any other wrestler, has aspirations for districts. He states, “the goal is to qualify for regionals.”
While the wrestling program had fallen on some tough times coming out of COVID, Bryson wants to change that. He says, “the goal is the keep getting a better record every year … (My record is) okay. I am going to try to improve it next year.”
B-A has one more tune-up at the Juniata Valley Invitational on Saturday before heading to the District 6 2A championships February 13 and 14.
