The Bellwood-Antis track and field teams had their first meet last Tuesday vs Hollidaysburg and Huntingdon at War Vets Field in Huntingdon.
Both the boys and girls came away with split results. The Blue Devils defeated Huntingdon 88-62 but fell to Hollidaysburg 89-61. B-A had some newcomers shine in their season and high school debut.
It was much the same for the Lady Devils, who toppled Huntingdon 112-38 before losing by a hair to Hollidaysburg 76-74. Despite the loss, B-A’s girls had several outstanding performances, particularly from its underclassmen.
For the boys, freshman Miles Smearman was able to win the 200 with a time of 23.82 and place 3rd in the 100 with a time of 11.71. Sophomore Owen Stoltzfus placed 2nd in both the 200 and 400 with times of 24.06 and 54.08.
Junior Cam Nelson won the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles with times of 16.03 and 42.51, and junior Ethan Shawley followed by placing 3rd in both events.
The Devils also got a pair of wins in the field, with Brady Hostler leaping 10-6 to win the high jump and Jayce Quick throwing 141-5 to take the discus by more than 20 feet over his nearest competitor.
Seniors Bryce Hollenbach and Martin Fatzinger both had impressive starts to their season in the distance events, with both boys placing in the top 5 in the 800, 1600 and 3200 with impressive times.
The Blue Devils relay teams landed second overall in each of the three relays.
For the girls, Ella Cherry won the triple jumps with a jump of 37-4, which broke her own school record. Cherry also teamed with Avey Powers to finish 2 and 3 in the 200 meters and the long jump.
Julie Kraft placed second in the 400 and won the 3200. In fact, in the 32200, B-A claimed 5 of the top 7 spots, with Kraft followed by Addison Wagner and Lily McNelis in a sweep of first, second, and third.
Chloe Stoltzfus won the 300 intermediate hurdles and placed third in the 100s.
In the throwing events, Emma Taneyhill won the discus by breaking her own school record and throwing 127-6 1/2, and placed second in shot put and third in javelin.
In the pole vault, Ava Worthing and Hailey Loupe finished second and third, respectively.
B-A will be back in action Saturday at the Altoona Igloo Invitational.
