There isn’t only one running and sprinting sensation at Bellwood.
Many people don’t immediately recognize Powers’ talents because of the Lady Devils’ other running and jumping sensation, sophomore Ella Cherry, but Powers deserves as much recognition. On most any other team she would be the top sprinter and jumper.
As recently as Wednesday, it was Powers’ consistency and ability to earn tough second- and third-place points that led the Lady Devils to a big win over rival Tyrone.
She is this week’s Athlete of the Week.
This year will be Powers’ third year doing track. She said she joined track because her mother pushed her to join.
Powers usually does at least 3 events, with her emphasis on the 100 meters, long jump, and 4×100 relay.
Avey runs a 13.02 second 100, a 28.3 200, and jumps a 17′ 1.5″, impressive stats.
Against Tyrone, Powers was called into action in the 400 to help provide her team with valuable points. Not only did she finish second overall, but she ran a 1:03, an incredible time for a first-time racer who had never prepared for the 400.
“She knows how seconds and thirds help the team and is willing to compete where the team needs points,” said Powers’ coach Mrs. Jennifer Soisson. “She recently ran the 400 for the first time … without ever having any 400-specific training she finished second, helping the team clinch the win.”
In the same meet, Powers also took home third place finishes in the long jump and 100.
Her versatility and attitude make her a valuable asset to the 8-1 Lady Devils’ team, Coach Soisson said.
“Avey is an outstanding athlete. She’s a strategic thinker and understands how important placement is to win meets,” she said.
Last year Powers was a part of the 4 x 100 team that made it to Shippensburg to compete in states, quite an accomplishment for a sophomore. She said her goals this year are to make it to states again, but in her own individual events.
“I am pushing towards making states in long jump and the 400 and continue to improve my other events,” Power’s said about her goals for the season.
She will have a chance to do that in just a few weeks when the Lady Devils compete at the District 6 2A championships. B-A finished second at Districts last year and is one of the front-runners for a team title in 2026.
“Avey sets high standards for herself and works year round to achieve her goals. She’s having a great season and we look forward to seeing what the rest of the season has in store,” said Mrs. Soisson.
Powers is also in FCA, Renaissance, and Mini Thon. She was a part of the B-A Cheer Squad from 7th grade to 11th.
